NATIONAL NEWS - Proposed Legislation Would Charge FDA with Regulating Tobacco Products
April 1, 2008
The House Energy and Commerce Committee is scheduled to mark up a bill this week that would give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority to regulate tobacco products, including their ingredients and warning label requirements. The measure would ban flavored cigarettes and allow the FDA to create tobacco product standards. The bill leaves Congress the power to ban tobacco products or reduce nicotine levels to zero. Republicans have produced nearly 30 amendments to the legislation that was introduced by House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Henry Waxman. The full Senate has yet to consider the bill.
