YOUTH & TOBACCO NEWS - Coalition Advocates for Increase in Tax on Other Tobacco Products

February 12, 2008

The Investing in Tobacco-Free Youth Coalition held a press conference this past week to announce that they will push for a tax increase on other tobacco products (OTP), which include little cigars and smokeless tobacco.  Tax increases on cigarettes in recent years have not been accompanied by an increase on the OTP tax, which has resulted in those products being disproportionately cheaper.  “Tobacco products like little cigars, cigars and smokeless tobacco are cheap and come in candy flavors that appeal to kids.  Their appeal to youth and the tobacco industry’s aggressive marketing of them in Ohio have led to a growing problem in the state,” said Shelly Kiser, director of advocacy for the American Lung Association of Ohio.
