Our Mission

The purpose of the AALS Section on Part-time Division Programs is to (a) promote the communication of ideas, interests and activities among members of the section in order to improve the quality of part-time legal education; (b) provide support to law schools seeking to add or enhance part-time legal education programs; and (c) to make recommendations to the Association on matters concerning part-time (day and evening) legal education programs.

The AALS Section on Part-time Division Programs is holidng a section program entitled "Reasonably Comparable Opportunities for Part-Time Students: As Different As Night and Day?" at the 2007 Annual AALS Conference. It will be held on Friday, January 5 from 8:30 - 10:15 am.

Description: Under the ABA Standards, dual-division schools are charged with providing reasonably comparable opportunities to students in their full-time and part-time J.D. programs. This session will explore the challenges schools face in their efforts to provide reasonably comparable opportunities to diverse groups of students with different needs and constraints. This interactive program will focus on how to effectively include part-time students in extra- and co-curricular activities, the logistics of operating administrative offices to serve all groups of students effectively, scheduling full-time faculty to teach in evening and weekend programs, and the challenges of scheduling courses to provide meaningful curricular access to part-time students. In addition, we will review a survey about part-time students that will provide a rich context for our discussion, and hopefully will generate ideas for scholarship regarding part-time students and dual-division programs.
