Families had a fun-filled evening that included performances by Short Stop Youth Center’s African Drum & Dance Ensemble and Magician Stephen Knight, live animal demonstrations, unlimited carousel rides, a caricature artist, and a fleet of firefighter vehicles from Station 322 of the Liberty Township Fire Department.  Thirteen adoption agencies and support service providers were also present to offer information and services.

Who We Are

The National Center for Adoption Law & Policy at Capital University Law School seeks to improve the laws, policies, and practices associated with child protection and adoption systems through education, information services, and advocacy programs.  Every day, we work toward realizing our goal that all children — especially those who have been abused or neglected, or are dependent on the state for their care — obtain safe, loving, and permanent homes.

What We Believe

Every child deserves a family.  Children who live in permanent, loving, and stable homes feel better about themselves, receive better healthcare, do better in school, and grow up to be better parents, workers, and citizens.

…Because every child deserves a family.

Real Living Academic Director Announced

Capital University Law School alumnus Harley E. Rouda, Jr. and his wife, Kaira Sturdivant Rouda, have committed to establish a $100,000 named endowed fund to support an academic director’s position at Capital University Law School.  Dean Jack Guttenberg has selected Associate Professor Angela Upchurch, the academic director of the National Center for Adoption Law & Policy, as the first Real Living Academic Director.

“I am honored to serve as the first Real Living Academic Director.  This generous donation will provide me with an incredible opportunity to highlight the educational programs we at the National Center for Adoption Law & Policy plan to build to ensure that future generations of child welfare and adoption attorneys are well-equipped to handle the ever-changing issues of children and family law,” said Professor Upchurch.

Representing a significant milestone in meeting the goals articulated in the Law School’s strategic plan, the Real Living Academic Director’s fund at Capital University Law School is an exciting development for both the Law School and the Center.

For several years, Mr. and Mrs. Rouda have been enthusiastic supporters of NCALP.  The Roudas were the architects behind the Center’s Autumn Wine Celebration and successfully hosted the fundraiser in their home the first two years.

Harley Rouda is the chief executive officer and managing partner of real estate company, Real Living, Inc., and a member of the Law School’s Board of Counselors.  Kaira Sturdivant Rouda is the chief operating officer for Real Living and president of Real Living Network Services.

NCALP Salutes Graduates and Hosts Summer Students

For this summer, the Center is delighted to host 15 students as interns and staff members.  These students are applying their legal research and writing skills to assist with various research projects for NCALP, including preparing educational materials to address public inquiries that we receive every day.  Through our summer job-matching service, Adoption Jobsite, we are excited to have the following five law students from across the country: Erin Bokulic from the New England School of Law, Amy Bosway from Ave Maria School of Law, Jenica James from Ohio Northern University College of Law, Siddhartha Kamisetti from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, and Laura Shapiro from Washington and Lee University School of Law.

In May, the Center said farewell to four remarkable students who have worked and volunteered for our programs through the majority of their time at Capital.  Fawn Gadel, Tiffany Rude, Britnie Ryan, and Rochelle Scarpino have played key roles in helping to coordinate various Center initiatives, which otherwise would not have been realized without them.  They will be missed!

Good luck to these talented women as they take the Ohio, Arizona, Maryland and Florida bars in July.

Frequent Center collaborator and Columbus attorney, Susan Garner Eisenman was awarded the Amy Silberberg Award for Public Service by the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (AAAA) in May.  This prestigious honor was in recognition of Susan’s years of advocacy to ensure that the adoption process works fairly and smoothly for adoptive and birth parents, and particularly children.

Susan, who has practiced law for more than 30 years, is the inaugural recipient of this national award that is named in honor of a deceased Minnesota lawyer who was a nationally noted adoption expert and advocate.  "It is truly an honor to receive an award named after a woman who made significant changes happen on behalf of children.  I have been fortunate to be able to commit my professional career to a cause that I have such a passion about," Susan said.

Susan’s practice focuses on adoption and child welfare law.  She has represented birth and adoptive parents in more than 2,500 adoptions from 45 states and 21 foreign countries.  She herself is also an adoptive parent.  Because of her commitment to justice for the poor and disadvantaged, about one-half of Susan’s caseload is devoted to cases involving children waiting for adoption in the public welfare system.

The Center has been fortunate to work with Susan on a number of initiatives, as she has become one of our regular speakers for workshops and seminars, as well as a frequent resource for referrals and inquiries.  Her active role in the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys has helped to foster a robust partnership between AAAA and the Center, most notably as the lead partner in our National Moot Court Competition in Child Welfare and Adoption Law.

Congratulations, Susan!

“The event was so beneficial (and just plain fun!) — prospective adoptive parents could speak to representatives from adoption/foster care groups in a casual atmosphere; families could take a private walk around the zoo; and families with adopted children could celebrate the happiness they've discovered through adoption… I saw lots of smiles and big hearts, and that made the environment so positive and magical!!” Nadine Palmer, Forever Home participant

“We really enjoyed the event! The abundance of activities and performances for families made it such a nice evening for kids and adults alike.“ Rachel Janutis, Forever Home participant
