Externship Information

If you are interested in applying for an externship, click here to register for more information.

If you are applying for an externship, you must also submit a statement of interest describing, in 500 words or less, why you are interested in an interdisciplinary externship. Please submit your statement of interest to ICWI@law.capital.edu.

OPTIONAL EXTERNSHIP INFORMATION

Hands-on experience is an important factor in understanding the interdisciplinary nature of child welfare work. To further develop your skills, a for-credit optional externship component is available to ICWI participants. Participants will be placed in an interdisciplinary child welfare setting. Optional externship availability is limited. The optional externship is not required to register for the ICWI week-long course.

  • The ICWI course is a prerequisite
  • The externship course number is LAW944
  • Optional externships require 50 additional on-site hours per credit hour received
  • Optional externship placements are only for the summer immediately following the course
  • Current tuition rates per credit hour apply
  • A placement site of the participant’s choosing can be approved, or a site can be assigned to you
  • Placement oversight will be administered by Professor Angela Upchurch, Academic Director of the National Center for Adoption Law & Policy and Associate Professor of Law at Capital University, and/or Carla Carpenter, MSSW and Associate Director of the National Center for Adoption Law & Policy
  • Participants must observe and assist in a child welfare practice setting
  • If a student is chosen to participate in an optional externship and a site is identified, the student is expected to carry out the assignment
  • Additional class hours are required
  • We are willing to work with your Field Placement Office or Externship Coordinator to assist in placement
