The
National
Center
for Adoption Law & Policy hosted its sixth annual national conference
on Monday, October 18 &
Tuesday, October 19, 2004
at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. This conference, entitled
‘Permanency
by the Numbers’, was conceived and planned in
partnership with ‘Fostering Results’ (a national foster care reform
initiative funded by the Pew Commission on Children in Foster Care).
The conference explored the challenges and benefits associated with
the planning and implementation of data-driven strategies to improve
caseflow management in dependency courts.
The conference
featured presentations by over 20 national experts who also
participated in panel discussions and Q & A sessions. Enthusiastic
welcoming remarks were provided by Justice Evelyn Stratton of the
Supreme Court of Ohio. The opening keynote address by Ohio’s own
United States Senator Mike DeWine was extremely well received during
which he demonstrated extensive knowledge of the foster care system
stemming all the way back to his own days as an assistant county
prosecutor. Also among this year’s presenters were the current
president and a past president of the National Council of Juvenile and
Family Court Judges. Over 200 professionals from 20 states were in
attendance, including judges, magistrates and juvenile court personnel
from 11
Ohio
counties.
