Putting your campus-wide policy into effect.
If you decide to extend your company's non-smoking policy to all areas of your campus, including company grounds and company-owned vehicles, you should give your employees at least three months notice to prepare for the change. You should also make sure that your policy is clear and concise and includes all the information employees will need, such as:
- Purpose for the policy, including the harmful effects of secondhand smoke, rising healthcare and insurance costs, and any other reasons relevant to your workplace.
- A tie between the policy and your corporate values (for example, employee health and performance).
- Clear statement of where smoking is prohibited (for example, in facilities, in company vehicles, and on company grounds).
- Clear statement on how other forms of tobacco (such as spit tobacco) will be regulated. Click here for more information on smokeless tobacco.
- Clear statement on enforcement and the consequences of noncompliance.
- Clear statement of how you will help employees who smoke or use tobacco quit (such as providing cessation assistance). Click here for more information on cessation.
- Name and phone number of the person who can answer questions about the policy.

You can feel confident that compliance with these types of policies is not a problem for most companies, so long as employees and visitors are clearly informed of the tobacco-free policy. Click here to read how many other companies have already successfully implemented these policies.
