YOUTH & TOBACCO NEWS - California Bill Banning All Free Tobacco Offers Sent to Governor

October 5 , 2007

A bill prohibiting all offers of free tobacco products has been sent to California Governor Schwarzenegger for his signature.  Although existing California law already prohibits tobacco giveaways at public places and events, the current bill would prohibit the use of coupons, gift certificates, gift cards, credits or proof-of-purchase to distribute free tobacco products.  The bill would also require tobacco companies that take part in non-sale distribution of tobacco products through the mail to verify that the recipient is 18 years or older.  Only Massachusetts has enacted similar legislation to the California bill.
