Michael H. Shapiro is the Dorothy W. Nelson Professor of Law at the University of Southern California Law School. He teaches in the areas of bioethics, constitutional law and healthcare regulation. Professor Shapiro is nationally known for his scholarship in bioethics as it relates to the convergence of legal, ethical and medical concerns in the context of new medical technologies. He has made numerous appearances on national and local television and radio programs, including NBC, ABC, and CBS television networks; CNN; the Today Show; Good Morning America; and TV Asahi (Japan). His publications include: Law, Culpability and Neural Sciences; Bioethics and Law: Cases, Materials and Problems; and Who Merits Merit? Some Problems in Distributive Justice Posed by the New Biology. Professor Shapiro is a member of both the Institutional Review Board for the Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center and the Pacific Council for Health Policy and Ethics. He was a reviewer for the U.S. Department of Energy’s proposals to study the Human Genome Project; and he served on the advisory panel to the Joint Committee on Surrogate Parenting of the California Legislature. Professor Shapiro received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in philosophy from the University of California Los Angeles and his J.D. from the University of Chicago.
