Capital Law to Welcome One of Its Most Diverse Classes in History
August 19, 2009
Capital University Law School will welcome a new incoming class of approximately 250 students at its opening Convocation ceremony, Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, in Mees Hall on the main campus of Capital University, 1 College and Main, in Bexley.
Ohio Supreme Court Justice Robert R. Cupp is the featured speaker and will present his “Thoughts upon Entering the Noble Profession.”
“This year’s class is one of the most diverse classes we have enrolled at Capital,” said Linda Mihely, assistant dean for Admission and Financial Aid. “Capital Law has been working hard to enhance its reputation, raise awareness of its academic programs, and strengthen outreach to prospective students. This year, we received more than 1,450 applications—a 15 percent increase over last year and well ahead of application trends at other law schools nationwide. As a result, our incoming class is one of the most diverse in our history in terms of gender, geography, age, ethnicity and background of experience.”
Other facts about this year’s entering class:
- 50 percent are women;
- 15 percent are students of color;
- They come from 20 states, plus Canada and Germany;
- They range in age from 21–55, with the average age being 26;
- And 11 new students already hold a graduate degree.
At the annual Convocation ceremony, new law students are presented with a ceremonial gavel to signify the beginning of their professional course of legal studies and to reinforce the Law School’s ideals of professionalism, ethics and dignity. Upon their graduation, students receive a sounding block to accompany this gavel and to signify the completion of their formal education. The Convocation ceremony also continues the tradition of having new students take the Oath of Professionalism.
The ceremony also will include remarks from Capital University Provost Dr. Edward S. Inch, Law School Dean Jack A. Guttenberg, Associate Dean Shirley Mays and Student Bar Association President Mark Weiker.
