Five outstanding Capital University Law School alumni will be honored at the Law Alumni Association’s Annual Alumni Recognition Luncheon on May 1, 2009, at 11:30 am at the Hyatt Regency Columbus, 350 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio.
Registered Patent Attorney and 1967 graduate Thomas R. Baruch (San Francisco, CA) is founder and managing director of the San Francisco-based venture capital firm CMEA Capital. He is a visionary whose support and commitment to the Law School has helped to enhance the faculty and the legal education Capital provides through the establishment of the Professor Emeritus John E. Sullivan Professor of Law position. He is the recipient of the Josiah H. Blackmore II Dean’s Award, recognizing outstanding service to Capital University Law School and the dean’s office.
Jonathan W. Marshall (Clintonville, OH), a 1970 graduate, will be honored with the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award. The award recognizes alumni for their significant achievements in the legal field and notable contributions to the profession, community and Law School. As secretary to the Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline for the Supreme Court of Ohio, Marshall has been a leader in the development and promotion of high standards of professional conduct within the legal and judicial professions for nearly 20 years.
Emmett M. Kelly (Upper Arlington, OH), partner at Bricker and Eckler LLP, and 1999 Law School graduate, is the recipient of the Alumni Outstanding Service Award. He is a member of the board of directors for The Buckeye Ranch Foundation and the company coordinator for Big Brothers/Big Sisters – Bowl for Kids Sake, as well as a volunteer with Rebuilding Together Columbus, Columbus Public Schools and a coach for the Upper Arlington Youth Lacrosse and Football associations.
The Young Alumna of the Year Award will be given to Kendra L. Carpenter (Northwest Columbus, OH), a 2001 graduate and director of litigation at Campbell, Hornbeck, Chilcoat & Veatch, LLC. Carpenter performs pro bono work on behalf of the Capital Area Humane Society, Franklin County Legal Aid and the Military Pro-Bono project through the American Bar Association. As a member of the Central Ohio Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Board of Trustees, she chaired their Advocacy Committee from 2003-2007 and was honored with the organization’s Service Award. Most recently, she received the 2009 Nick Mamias fundraising award.
Capital University Law School 2002 graduate LeeAnn M. Massucci (Upper Arlington, OH) is the first recipient of a new award to be given this year, the Graduate of the Last Decade Award (G.O.L.D.). As founder of Massucci & Kline, she focuses her practice exclusively in the family law area. She serves as an adjunct professor to the Center for Dispute Resolution and teaches the Divorce Mediation Certification courses required by the Supreme Court for Ohio for court appointed divorce mediators. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Women Lawyers of Franklin County, co-chairing their Community Service committee and serves on a committee formed by Judge Jim Mason to create a Self-Representation Center for the Common Pleas Court Division of Domestic Relations.
“Our Alumni Recognition Luncheon is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Capital University Law School and all of its outstanding alumni for their commitment to service, the legal profession and our Law School and students,” said Dean Jack A. Guttenberg. “This year’s event also gives us the opportunity to celebrate some other major successes of the Law School this year: our #1 ranking on the Ohio Bar Exam for first-time takers; our #2 ranking in the nation among our peers in faculty scholarship published; and establishing three new professorships to reward faculty for outstanding teaching, scholarship and service.”
In addition to the awards luncheon, other alumni day events to be held at the Hyatt Regency Columbus include a 2.5 hour CLE on Wills, Estate Planning and Probate from 2:00 – 4:45 pm; an all alumni and bar success reception from 5:00 – 6:30 pm; and 25 th and 50 th Class Reunion dinners. More than 300 alumni are expected to return to the Law School for the day’s festivities.
