Students Giving Back to Students is a Capital Law School tradition in which the graduating class establishes a scholarship fund to financially help current and future students. The Class of 2008 is continuing this tradition and establishing the Class of 2008 Scholarship fund.

What is the Class of 2008 Scholarship fund? This is a permanent endowed fund that will be invested to generate income. The investment income generated by the Class of 2008 Scholarship can only be used to fund annual scholarship awards names in recognition and appreciation of the Class of 2008.

Once the total cash gift, pledge commitments and matching gifts meet the minimum scholarship funding, Capital will establish the Class of 2008 Scholarship Awards. There is a potential for the Class of 2008 Scholarships to be awarded as soon as the 2008-09 academic year.

It is anticipated that as a result of ongoing charitable contributions from the Class of 2008, as well as long-term investment performance the endowed market value of the Class of 2008 Scholarship will grow over time, providing the opportunity to increase the amount of the scholarship award and potentially the number of awards as well.

Currently, the majority of scholarship funding available to CULS is utilized to help recruit as strong an entering class as possible. Unfortunately, the school’s limited resources don’t provide much opportunity to award scholarships to upper-class students who may not have qualified for scholarship support based on entering credentials but who have performed well at CULS.

The success of the Classes of 2005, 2006, and 2007 allowed Capital to award scholarships in the 2007-08 academic year to seven upper class students. Honorarium plaques are displayed on the second floor to thank these classes who have established class scholarship funds and recognize the individual award recipients of each scholarship.

For more information about the Students Giving Back to Students program, speak to a class captain. The 2008 Captains are: Caitlin Barbee, Sondra Bryson, Nita Hanson, Andy Kress, Liz Maag, Richard McNeely, Sarah Persinger, David Riddle, Rodger Shuback, and Kirk Walter.

The Class Captains thank you in advance for your consideration and ask you to consider a minimum cash/check gift of $20.08 and a minimum pledge of $100 to be paid quarterly over the next four years starting in July 2009. As you will see on the pledge form, there is a great opportunity for your gift to be match by faculty and administration. In addition, Robert Weiler, L’83, H’05 will match your pledge commitment if you pledge $120.08 up to $320.08.

Before April 11, please complete and return it to a 2008 Class Gift Campaign Captain or to the Office of Development on the third floor.

A wine and cheese reception will be held for all donors of the Class of 2008 Scholarship fund on Tuesday, April 15 from 4:30 – 6:00 in the Huntington Commons.

The Class of 2008 has something to be proud of, something that will provide meaningful support to future students and something that will last beyond the class members themselves.

Help create the Class of 2008 legacy!
