Adoption Academy Presents Tax Law Expert Professor Richard J. Wood

Among the many concerns adoptive families have to consider are tax issues and tax benefits. At the Adoption Academy, hosted by the National Center for Adoption Law and Policy and the Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Capital Law School Professor Richard J. Wood presented a class covering these concerns for adoptive families.

A tax law expert, Professor Wood reviewed the following issues in his presentation, Affording Your Adoption:

• Federal & state tax credits for adoption-related expenses, including the differences in tax credits for international versus domestic adoptions
• Federal & state tax credits associated specifically with the adoption of special needs children
• The taxability of adoption benefits (such as employer-provided adoption benefits)
• Other tax-related issues for families to consider

The presentation was distributed to other sites in Ohio through a web cast. Adoptive families at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, as well as families in Akron, Dayton, and Toledo Children’s Hospitals, participated. The teleconferencing was provided with the support of a grant from the Ohio State Bar Foundation.

Wood’s class was part of a 12-week series of courses offering prospective adoptive parents educational programs from objective sources. The goal is to bring information together in a comprehensive and sensitive manner to help prospective parents make informed choices.
