Smith to Testify Before U.S. Congress

February 27, 2007

Former Federal Election Commission Chairman, Professor Brad Smith

On Thursday, March 1, Professor of Law Brad Smith will be testifying before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. Smith will be testifying regarding the merits of “S.1: The Senate Approach to Lobbying Reform.”

This lobbying and ethics reform bill was passed by the U.S. Senate in January and Smith will speak about the bill’s proposals to regulate paid grassroots advocacy.

Smith was quoted by Roll Call on Feb. 28, 2007 on this subject in the article "Efforts Intensify on House Lobby Bill".

Smith is a former chairman of the Federal Election Commission and a nationally recognized expert on campaign finance reform. He maintains that all restrictions on campaign giving should be eliminated as they violate the right to free speech.

The 13-member Subcommittee that Smith will testify before includes freshman representative Jim Jordan, a 2002 graduate of the Law School.
