Capital University Law School has graduated its first students from the Mediation & Dispute Resolution Certificate Program. Sandy DeBlanc-Robbins and Paula Daniel Harer earned their certifications from the Mediation and Dispute Resolution Program in December 2006.

DeBlanc-Robbins and Harer pursued their certifications to advance their careers and position themselves to take advantage of emerging trends in law, mediation, and negotiation.

DeBlanc-Robbins, who received a Mediation Certificate, said, “The training I obtained through the certificate program prepared me to pursue multiple options as I enter a career in mediation.” She plans to practice mediation through the court system and begin a private mediation practice that focuses on mediating disputes between businesses and consumers.

Dispute Resolution Certificate Holder Paula Daniel Harer said, “I had heard about mediation and its prominent use in dissolutions and divorce proceedings. I thought it must be a profession on the rise.”

The certificate program is designed to provide students with mediation and negotiation tools and techniques important in many fields, not just those in the legal field.

Both graduates said they would highly recommend the program. “The Capital University Law School program offered me the opportunity to learn the skills I will need and to apply those skills in an environment that lends guidance and support. The Certificate Program provides a level of credibility that is unique in this field,” said DeBlanc-Robbins.

Harer and DeBlanc-Robbins will receive their certificates at the Capital University Law School Honors Convocation set for Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, at the School Employees Retirement System ( 300 E. Broad Street , Columbus ) at 5:00 pm

Allowing individuals to merge theory and practice as they enhance their dispute resolution abilities, the Mediation & Dispute Resolution Certificate Program consists of a combination of academic courses and skills training classes. Open to member of the general public, the program consists of academic courses, skills training and clinical experiences. The program includes options for on-line education and pre-approved courses from outside training organizations to allow individuals to take specialized training courses and to allow out-of-state individuals to take training classes closer to their homes.

The program was launched in fall 2005 and has received major funding from the Nationwide Foundation and support from the Columbus Bar Association and Foundation.
