Capital Law Students Receive Federal Bar ScholarshipsOctober 27, 2006
Two Capital University Law School students are the recipients of the Federal Bar Association (FBA) Columbus Chapter diversity scholarships. Second year students Maria Honer and Justin Isom have received two of the three awards given. This is the first year these awards have been made by the FBA and it includes both a $5000 scholarship and externship opportunity with a federal court judge. The scholarships and externships are awarded to minority students based on academic merit, character and financial need. Students must complete an application process that includes an essay and an interview with a FBA board member. Students must complete their externships by May 2007, after which there is an option to extend the externship.
Maria Honer and Justin Isom are both serving as externs at the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Honer is an extern for Judge Edward Sargus; Isom is an extern for Judge Michael Watson, L’87. The goal of the FBA diversity scholarship program is to increase the
diversity represented on the courts. Students benefit from the program
by gaining first-hand experience working in the federal court system,
and by the opportunity to interact with judges and create a network of
contacts.
