Law Students Provide Tax Preparation AssistanceMay 8, 2006 This year, Capital University Law School students once again opened a tax preparation site for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, a nationwide program sponsored by the IRS to provide assistance with income tax form preparation for low income and elderly clients. The students receive training from the IRS. All VITA return preparers must complete and pass an examination, which certifies them to prepare certain types of tax returns. In addition to performing an outstanding public service, students who participate in the program are also able to credit their VITA site hours to a pro bono validation that appears on a student’s law school transcript. Professor Danshera Cords oversaw the program at Capital University Law School as faculty advisor. “It was a busy and successful filing season,” said Professor Cords. “Additionally, VITA gave students an opportunity to hone their interviewing and counseling skills.” |
