John D. Holschuh Receives Phi Alpha Delta’s Hays AwardMarch 8, 2006
Each year, Phi Alpha Delta, a law school fraternity, honors a judge with the Hayes Award. Recipients of the Hayes Award are judges who have achieved excellence on the bench. This year, the award was presented to the Honorable John D. Holschuh for his outstanding service to the profession and commitment to the judiciary. "I want to express my deep appreciation for this great honor,"
said Judge Holschuh. “Phi Alpha Delta has been important in my own
life. I was a serious law student and didn't participate in many activities,
but took the time to enjoy being a part of Phi Alpha Delta." Judge
Holschuh also reminisced that Phi Alpha Delta was responsible for his
marriage: “As justice of my chapter, I had to attend a Phi Alpha
Delta member dance and a friend arranged a blind date for the event. This
was how I met my wife.” Judge Holschuh graduated from Miami University and the University of Cincinnati College of Law. In law school, he was editor-in-chief of the Cincinnati Law Review, a member of the Order of Coif, and justice of the Chase Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta. Holschuh served as a law clerk for Judge Mell G. Underwood of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Later, he worked as an associate in the law firm of McNamara & McNamara and as an associate and partner in the firm of Alexander, Ebinger, Holschuh, Fisher & McAlister in Columbus, Ohio. He was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio on May 23, 1980. Judge Holschuh became Chief Judge of the Southern District of Ohio on March 15, 1990 and served until October 12, 1996 when he became Senior United States District Judge. Phi Alpha Delta was formed to connect students and teachers of the law with members of the bench and the bar.
