Scholars Day Introduces New Scholarship Recipients to the Law School

April 22, 2005

Sat., April 16, 2005, the first annual Scholars Day introduced scholarship recipients from the incoming class of 2005-06 to Capital University Law School. Organized to honor and inform the prospective law students, the program featured messages about student involvement and leadership.

Dean Jack Guttenberg began the event with remarks about the Law School and the law school experience. Associate Dean Athornia Steele facilitated a panel on opportunities for student involvement. Panelists included Professor Janet Blocher, director of Legal Writing Program; Professor Danshera Cords, faculty director of Graduate Programs; the Hon. Algenon Marbley, Judge, US District Court; Professor Kent Markus, director of the National Center for Adoption Law & Policy, and Mary Ann Willis, director of Career Services. Director of Student and Minority Affairs Torian Lee facilitated a panel of student leaders who shared information about opportunities to participate the student bar association, faculty research assistant program, the minority clerkship program, Law Review, legal clinic and the moot court program.

“This program was specifically designed to highlight some of the special opportunities available to our top students,” said Assistant Dean of Admission Linda Mihely. “Our goal was to help our new students become better acquainted with the programs and people at Capital, and based upon the responses we’ve received from those who attended, I think we did just that!”

An alumni luncheon was held for scholarship recipients at the Athletic Club. Heather G. Sowald, L’79, president of the Ohio State Bar Association, delivered a keynote address that included some tips on being successful in law school. Participants then attended a presentation of a mock moot court argument at the nearby Supreme Court of Ohio.

“Scholars Day is a wonderfully successful program,” said Dean Guttenberg. “I want to thank the faculty, students and alumni who participated in it. This is a great example of an entire community effort that produces a great program.”

Law faculty joined the scholarship recipients and their families at the end of the day for a dessert reception.

Approximately 75 people, of whom 46 were prospective students, attended the program.
