Moot Court Board Celebrates Student Success at Annual Banquet

The Capital University Law School Moot Court Board held its annual banquet on Sat., April 9, 2005, to honor the law students who were members of the 2004-05 moot court teams and to recognize their exceptional accomplishments. The Board also honored Christopher N. Slagle, L’04, with the Outstanding Moot Court Board Alumni Award and presented 10 Excellence in Advocacy Awards to current students.

The evening began with remarks from the Moot Court Board Chief Justice Kathleen Tregear and Dean Jack A. Guttenberg.

“Capital has a strong advocacy skills program as evidenced by the fine performances of our moot court teams this year,” said Dean Guttenberg. “I am impressed by our students’ accomplishments and on behalf of the faculty and administration, I congratulate you.”

The Honorable Susan D. Brown, L'83

The Honorable Susan D. Brown was the keynote speaker. Judge Brown serves on the Tenth District Court of Appeals and is a 1983 graduate of the Law School. In her remarks, Judge Brown offered a “Top 10” list of oral advocacy do’s and don’ts.

Capital’s Faculty Advisors recognized their respective moot court teams and congratulated the law students on their admirable performances. Capital’s teams included: Labor Law Moot Court Team; Frederick Douglass Moot Court Team; Jessup International Law Moot Court Team; Tax Moot Court Team; Mock Trial Team; Environmental Moot Court Team; Corporate Law Moot Court Team; Sports Law Moot Court Team; and the 2004 and 2005 National Moot Court Teams.

Christopher N. Slagle was honored with the first Outstanding Moot Court Board Alumni Award. He was presented with the award in appreciation for his extensive volunteer time in judging every round of the first year Moot Court Competition. Mr. Slagle was a member of Capital’s National Championship Sports Law Moot Court Team in 2002 and the Moot Court Board as Associate Chief Justice Internal in 2003-2004. He is currently an attorney with Bricker and Eckler, LLP.

Professor Angela Upchurch, advisor to the Moot Court Board, presented the first Excellence in Advocacy Awards. The awards were given to students to recognize their exceptional oral advocacy skills, exemplary teamwork, and contributions to the school through oral advocacy. The recipients of the 2005 awards were: Jayme Fountain, Amir Clayton Powell, Matthew Johnson, Andrea Salimbene, Kathleen Tregear, Lisa Watson, Stephanie Garland, William Van O’Linda, Jennifer Hinz-Inskeep and Elizabeth Kuhn.

The evening concluded with the passing of the gavel from outgoing Chief Justice Kathleen Tregear to the incoming Moot Court Board Chief Justice Adrienne Dorbish.
