Honors Convocation Recognizes Student Achievements

Dean Guttenberg congratulates the class of 2005

Capital University Law School held its first annual Honors Convocation on Tuesday, April 5, 2005, to recognize numerous student accomplishments over the academic year. Before a packed audience of students, parents and faculty, Dean Jack A. Guttenberg and Director of Student and Minority Affairs Torian Lee presented nearly two hundred awards for academic performance and student leadership.

“The faculty and administration at Capital Law School are proud of our students and their success,” said Dean Guttenberg. “We are excited to begin this annual tradition to recognize student achievements.”

The awards presented included CALI Excellence for the Future Awards for Fall 2004. The Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction awards a certificate to the student who has earned the highest grade in each course in law school. More than 90 students were recognized with this honor.

Student Leader Awards were given to current law school students Tiffany Hostetler, Amir Clayton Powell, Karee Laing and Katherine Elliot for their extraordinary leadership within the student body. Emily Huddleston, Brandi Rovito and Sandra Weida received the Outstanding Student in Clinic Awards, and Courtney Zollars was the recipient of the National Center for Adoption Law & Policy Outstanding Student Award.

Phi Alpha Delta and the Corporate and Business Law Association were recognized as the Student Organizations of the Year for contributing to the life of the law school.

Students who received a Pro Bono Certificate for completing 50 hours in the Pro Bono Validation Program were Nicolas Bryan, Brooke Chesney, Adrienne Dorbish and Kathleen Tregear.

Janine Maney was the recipient of the Lead Article Published, Equivalent to Faculty Publication.” She published, “Carbon Dioxide Emissions, Global Warming, and the Clean Air Act” in 13 New York University Environmental Law Journal (2005).

Sandra Weida, a fourth-year, evening student, was recognized for the Highest GPA Ever at Capital Law School with a cumulate GPA of 4.0.

The Community Service Award to honor a graduating student who has made an impact on society through community service went to Jennifer Adair.

Allison Lyons, editor-in-chief of the student newspaper Res Ipsa, received the Res Ipsa Outstanding Article Award for her story, “Dean’s Forums provided answers to students concerns.”

More than 80 upper class students were honored with the Order of the Curia. The Order of the Curia is a Law School honorary society. Members must have completed 60 hours of course work and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0. Among the aims of the Order are the maintenance of the traditional ideals of the legal profession in character and ability, and the development of the love of knowledge for the sake of legal scholarship.

Nearly 300 students received special recognition during the ceremony for being named to the Dean’s List for Fall 2004. Students must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA.
