The
Honorable Algenon Marbley Honored at 16th David D. White Reception
The Honorable Algenon L. Marbley, H’00, was honored
at the 16th Annual David D. White Award Reception March 8, 2005. The event,
sponsored by Baker and Hostetler LLP and the Capital University Law School
African American Law Alumni Association recognized Judge Marbley for his
contributions to and involvement in the Columbus community.
This annual award commemorates the first African American graduate of
Capital University Law School, David D. White, L’31. Presented by
the African American Law Alumni Association, the award honors an individual
whose legal and civic accomplishments serve as a model for African American
students. This event helps to fund the David D. White Endowment from which
four scholarships are awarded annually to African-American law student
at Capital University.
Marbley was appointed by President Clinton to the United States District
Court for the Southern District of Ohio on November 27, 1997. Until he
was appointed as a US District Court Judge, Marbley was a partner with
the law firm of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease from 1991. Marbley concentrated
in civil litigation when he was with the firm. He litigated cases involving
general business litigation, products liability, and employment litigation.
Marbley handled numerous jury trials in federal and state courts and argued
before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Sixth and Seventh Circuits,
and the Ohio Appellate Courts.
Marbley has taught trial advocacy at Capital University Law School and
the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Also, from 1984 to 1986, he
taught Criminal Law and Procedure at Northeastern Illinois University.
In addition, Marbley has been active with a number of community organizations
including the Salesian Boys and Girls Club, where he served as the President
of the Board of Directors. He is also active in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters
Association of Columbus, Franklin County Board, Project Linden, Inc, and
Franklin County Children Services.
