Income Tax Assistance Available for Low Income and Elderly

February 12, 2004

Capital University Law School students have again opened a tax preparation site for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, a nationwide program sponsored by the IRS to provide assistance with income tax form preparation for low income and elderly clients.

The Law School’s tax assistance site is coordinated by law students Cara Orr of Columbus, OH, and Richard Meier of Rockford, IL. Professor Danshera Cords is the faculty advisor.

The Capital University Law School site is located in the Capital University Law School Legal Clinic. Clients and visitors should use the Capital Street entrance and check-in with security. Until Tuesday, April 13, 2004, the hours are as follows:

Tuesdays 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm
Saturdays 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

VITA tax preparation sites are generally located in neighborhood centers such as libraries, schools and shopping malls. They are staffed certified volunteers. Certified student volunteers at the Law School receive pro bono credit hours for their service to the community, which can be applied to a pro bono validation that appears on a student’s law school transcript.
