Gain Recognition for Pro Bono Work

Highlighting Capital University Law School’s commitment to providing
legal access to all, Law School alumni have been represented in every
Columbus Bar Association Pro Bono Award presented this year by the Columbus
Bar Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Columbus legal community.
The awards presentation was made at the Columbus Bar Foundation’s
annual meeting Nov. 18, 2004.
An attorney at the Capital University Law School Legal Clinic and chair
of the CBA’s Delivery of Legal Services Committee, Lorie
McCaughan, L’96, presented the four Pro Bono Awards:

C. Bernard Brush, L’75, won the award for
Outstanding Pro Bono Service by an Individual. Brush is a
volunteer for the Volunteer Lawyer Services of the Columbus Bar and
council member for the city of Pataskala.

Kathleen Trafford, L’79, accepted the award
for Outstanding Pro Bono Service by a Law Firm, on behalf
of Porter Wright Morris & Arthur for their work in the area of
domestic violence. [

Calfee Halter & Griswold LLP won the award for Outstanding
Pro Bono Service Project. In the Columbus office of this firm,
four of the 19 attorneys are alumni of the Law School. They include
Courtney Miller, L’98, T’02, Leah Pappas, L’92,
Daniel Reinhard, L’01, and Stephen Wiley, L’97.
The project for which they won the award is a program to help immigrants
start businesses. Clients are assisted throughout the entire start-up
process from filing with the secretary of state to applying for a
small business loan.

Judge Kay Lias, L’77, won Outstanding
Pro Bono Service by a Judge. Lias is an administrative judge
for the Common Pleas Court in Franklin County, Ohio.
Awards were based on nominations coordinated through the CBA. Last year,
the Capital University Law School Legal Clinic won the 2003 Pro Bono Service
