Chief Justice Moyer Welcomes Capital University Law School's New Students

August 5, 2003

Student Orientation for Capital University Law School's incoming class will begin Thursday, August 21, 2003 at 5:30 p.m. in Mees Hall on Capital University's main campus in Bexley. This year's Opening Convocation will feature The Honorable Thomas Moyer, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio, who will welcome Capital's 270 new students into the legal profession.  Justice Moyer, whose comments are entitled, "Thoughts on Entering the Noble Profession," will participate in Capital Law School's tradition of presenting gavels to the new students as a way of instilling a greater sense of ethics and professionalism as the 2003 entering class begins the study of law.

This year's class was selected from a pool of nearly 1,350 applicants. Nearly one-half of the new students are women, approximately 14 percent represent minority ethnic groups, and they come to Capital Law School from more than 100 undergraduate institutions.

"This year has been one of the most competitive applicant pools in the history of the law school," says Linda Mihely, Assistant Dean of Admission and Financial Aid. "We are extremely excited about the academic strength of this year's class, as well as the variety of experience and backgrounds they bring to our student body."

"This academic year promises to be an exciting one," says Interim Dean Athornia Steele. "We have scheduled a variety of special events over the next year in celebration of Capital Law School's Centennial Year. In addition, our new students will have the opportunity to help shape the direction of this law school into the next century as we continue to accomplish the goals of our strategic plan and conduct a nation-wide search for a new law school dean to replace former Dean Steven C. Bahls, who recently left Capital after more than nine years to become President of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois."

Orientation for new students runs August 21-23, 2003. Law classes begin Monday, August 25.
