Law School Welcomes New Recipient of Baker & Hostetler Chair, Mark R. Brown

Newton D. Baker/Baker & Hostetler Chair of Law, Mark R. Brown

At an evening reception hosted by Baker & Hostetler LLP on November 12, 2003, Professor Mark Brown was formally introduced as the Newton D. Baker/Baker & Hostetler Chair of Law at Capital University Law School. The reception not only welcomed Brown, but also honored the first chair holder, Professor Josiah H. Blackmore II.

Professor Brown came to Capital University Law School from Stetson University College of Law in Florida, where he was a tenured faculty member. He has taught at the University of Illinois College of Law and The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law as a visiting professor. For the 1993 October Term, he served under Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist.

Josiah H. Blackmore, former dean and president of Capital University and first Baker & Hostetler chair

Professor Blackmore, former dean of the Law School and president of Capital University, was the first Baker & Hostetler chair and is a recognized authority in the area of evidence, having co-authored the Ohio Evidence Law Treatise and having served on the Ohio Supreme Court Rules Advisory Committee.

The Newton D. Baker/Baker & Hostetler Endowment sponsors a distinguished faculty member and provides Capital University Law School with funds for investment and program development. The chair has been made possible through the generosity of John D. Drinko, senior partner of Baker & Hostetler; the Baker & Hostetler Founders Trust; the Hostetler Foundation; the Mellen Foundation; and the Elizabeth G. and John D. Drinko Charitable Foundation.

Speakers at the reception included George Hairston, managing partner at Baker & Hostetler LLP, Theodore Frederickson, president of Capital University, Athornia Steele, interim dean of the Law School, Josiah H. Blackmore and Mark Brown.
