Capital University Law School Welcomes New Faculty Members for Fall 2003

Capital University Law School welcomes five new faculty members for fall 2003 - Mark R. Brown, Regina F. Burch, Charles E. Cohen, Susan D. Rozelle, and Angela Upchurch. In addition, Professor Kent Markus, who has been a visiting professor of law at Capital, has been named an associate professor of law. Capital University Law School's strategic plan calls for the addition of new faculty to enhance the student/faculty ratio, increase the number of electives offered, reduce section size in required courses, and increase scholarship.

"Our new faculty members are committed teachers, scholars and lawyers who are joining an already dedicated and talented faculty," says Interim Dean Athornia Steele. "They will lead Capital University Law School into its second century and help our students gain the critical thinking skills required for today's legal professionals."

Professor Mark R. Brown has been appointed the Newton D. Baker/Baker and Hostetler Chair. Professor Brown is one of the nation's leading scholars in the area of civil rights litigation. He was a tenured faculty member at Stetson University College of Law in Florida. Professor Brown also has taught at the University of Illinois College of Law and The Ohio State University College of Law as a visiting professor. He graduated first in his class from the University of Louisville School of Law and received a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Dayton and a LL.M. from the University of Illinois College of Law. At Capital, Professor Brown will teach in the Constitutional law area.

Professor Regina F. Burch will teach Business Associations and other business law courses. Most recently, she was a visiting professor of law at DePaul University College of Law where she taught Business Organizations and Intellectual Property Transactions for corporate attorneys. She practiced corporate, securities and intellectual property transactional law with the firm of Testa, Hurwitz and Thibeault, LLP in Boston, Mass., and then McCutchen, Doyle, Brown and Enersen, LLP in Palo Alto, Calif. While a student at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, Professor Burch served as the senior symposium editor for the Hastings West-Northwest Journal of Environmental Law & Policy. She is also a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management and Harvard College.

Professor Charles E. Cohen joins the Capital University Law School law faculty as an assistant professor in the areas of property law and commercial law. Most recently, he was in private practice with the law firm of Farella, Braun & Martel, LLP in San Francisco. He previously served as a law clerk to The Honorable Thomas G. Nelson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Professor Cohen graduated from University of California, Hastings College of the Law where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and Senior Articles Editor for the Hastings Law Journal. Prior to becoming a lawyer he was on the staff of People magazine, Money magazine and the New York Times.

Professor Susan D. Rozelle joins Capital as an assistant professor. She was a law clerk to Justice Mel L. Greenberg of the Massachusetts Appeals Court. She was previously a clerk to Justice Roderick L. Ireland of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts and a practicing attorney with Nutter, McClennen, Fish, LLP in Boston. Professor Rozelle graduated magna cum laude from Duke University School of Law. While in law school, she founded and was editor-in-chief of Alibi Literary Magazine. Professor Rozelle received her B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Central Florida. She will teach in the Criminal Law and Evidence areas.

Professor Angela Upchurch joins Capital's law faculty as an assistant professor. She served as a law clerk to The Honorable Michael Murphy of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in Salt Lake City. She previously was a law clerk to The Honorable Avern Cohn of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Professor Upchurch graduated first in her class at Loyola University Chicago School of Law where she was editor-in-chief of the Law Journal. She received her B.A. in communications and political science from Loyola University Chicago. Professor Upchurch will teach Civil Procedure and Torts.

Professor Kent Markus, who has been a visiting professor of law at Capital since 1998, has been named an associate professor of law. Professor Markus directs the National Center for Adoption Law & Policy at Capital University Law School. Before coming to Capital, he was Counselor and Deputy Chief of Staff to U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and chief of staff to former Ohio Attorney General Lee Fisher. Professor Markus graduated with honors from Harvard Law School and obtained his B.S. from Northwestern University. He teaches an extensive set of subjects, including Adoption Law, the only such class regularly offered at an American Law School; Administrative Law; and Remedies.
