The Estabrook Trust has committed $50,000 to support Capital University Law School’s National Conference of Minority Professionals in Alternative Dispute Resolution. The grant will be paid in $10,000 installments in October of 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. R. Bruce Snyder, Partner-in-Charge of the Dayton office of Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP, serves as the trustee of the Estabrook Trust.

Capital University Law School has concluded, because many more cases are settled than litigated, there is increased demand for great dispute resolution skills. This is true particularly among minority professionals, where there is a shortage of minority mediators. The annual National Conference of Minority Professionals in Alternative Dispute Resolution was developed to enhance the dispute resolution skills of minority professionals through training, among other goals. The first conference, held in May 2002, offered training programs on basic mediation, transformative mediation, cultural competence and peer mediation to more than 150 attendees.

“Porter Wright is committed to supporting Capital University’s Law School on behalf of the Estabrooks,” said Snyder. “We know the Estabrooks would be delighted to know of their investment in this wonderful program to help minority professionals in the areas of law, social work, state and local government, school administration, human resources, court administration and civil rights develop new skills.”

Hubert Estabrook was a prominent Dayton lawyer until his death in 1975 and a co-founder of the firm that is now Porter Wright’s Dayton office. The entire Estabrook estate was conveyed to the Hubert A. and Gladys C. Estabrook Charitable Trust in 1977 to fund legal education in Ohio. Based on their wishes, the Estabrook Charitable Trust Fund is directed to distribute its funds to Ohio’s nine law schools and other institutions that advance the study of law in Ohio.

The 2003 National Conference of Minority Professionals in Alternative Dispute Resolution will be held May 19-21, 2003. Contact Professor Floyd Weatherspoon (614.236.6531) or Jessica Poprocki (614.236.6377), director of special projects, to receive more information.

Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP is a nationally recognized law firm that traces its origins to 1846 in Ohio. With more than 280 lawyers, the firm has offices in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Dayton, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and Naples, Florida.
