In Memoriam: Professor Brian A. FreemanFeb. 23, 2002 It is with great sadness that I inform you that Professor Brian Freeman died on Saturday, February 23, 2002, after a gallant fight with leukemia. Professor Freeman was a dedicated teacher, scholar and administrator. He joined the Capital University Law School Faculty in 1967 as an assistant professor of law and served with great distinction as an Interim Dean in the late 1980's and early 1990's and as an Associate Dean for nine years. Prior to coming to Capital, Professor Freeman was an assistant attorney general for the state of Ohio and a Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force where he attained the rank of Captain and received an Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. He was especially proud of his service as a member and president of the Bexley, Ohio, Board of Education, and his service as secretary and member of the Board of Directors of the Columbus Clippers Baseball Team and Coopers Stadium. Professor Freeman was honored this past January as the Association of American Law Schools Teacher of the Year for Capital University Law School. Professor Freeman will be remembered as a great teacher, mentor and friend. As both a member of the faculty and law school administration, he was, without exception, committed to ensuring that Capital provide its students with the best education possible. A generation of law school graduates will not forget how Professor Freeman pushed them to the highest level of achievement, nor will they forget how much they appreciated having him when they were faced with constitutional law questions on the bar exam and in practice. Professor Freeman was a role model for law students and a mentor to Capital's law faculty. He dedicated his life to his family - Mabel his wife, and their two children Kirsten and Kevin - to the law, and to education in a way that will be remembered for years to come. Professor Freeman's family will receive visitors on Tuesday, February 26, 2002, at Schoedinger Midtown Chapel, 229 E. State Street in Columbus. Visiting hours are 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 27, 2002, at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 333 S. Drexel in Bexley, Ohio. A memorial service will be held at Capital University Law School (room 242), 303 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio at 12:30 on Thursday, February 28, 2002. In lieu of flowers, Professor Freeman's family requests contributions to the Brian A. Freeman Scholarship Fund at Capital University Law School. Dean Steven C. Bahls |
