Ohio Conference of Minority Professionals in Alternative Dispute Resolution 

Eliminating Barriers for Minorities in the Field of Alternative Dispute Resolution

Capital University Law School will host an inter-disciplinary conference entitled, "Eliminating Barriers for Minorities in the Field of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)" on May 20-21, 2002. The purpose of the conference is:

     * To promote the use of ADR in the minority community;
     * To identify obstacles that minorities face in becoming an ADR professional;
     * To bring together a network of minority ADR professionals and to encourage their active participation in the profession;
     * To provide information and guidelines on how minorities can become listed on various ADR panels; and
     * To enhance the skills of minority ADR professionals.

The conference will include panel discussions, presentations and training to accommodate various levels of experience among minority ADR professionals. Presentations/panels cover nearly the full spectrum of ADR, e.g. commercial, courts, family, community, employment/labor, and education. There also will be introductory training programs on basic mediation, transformative mediation, cultural competence, and peer mediation.

Opening the conference will be Nancy Rogers, Dean and Moritz Chair in Dispute Resolution of The Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law. Featured speakers scheduled to participate include: Professor Christopher Cooper, director of the Dispute Resolution Certificate Program at St. Xavier University (Chicago, IL); and Marvin E. Johnson, professor and executive director of the National Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution in Crofton, MD. A panoply of ADR organizations will participate in the conference, including the American Arbitration Association, Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, national Association of Securities Dealers, and the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. 

The cost of the conference is $50. This fee will cover the cost of materials and lunch and refreshments on Monday and Tuesday. A networking reception will be held on Monday following the conference. Registration is limited to allow a broad representation of organization. Please register early.
