
New Developments in Labor and Employment Law - About the SpeakersShannon O’Brien graduated from Capital University Law School with a certificate of concentration in labor and employment law. Following law school, O’Brien was hired by the Ohio Civil Rights Commission to work with the chief legal counsel. She moved to the Ohio Attorney General’s office in May, 2006. Since then, Shannon has worked in the Civil Rights Section of the attorney general’s office, representing the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. She is responsible for litigating cases of discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations under R.C. 4112. She has conducted gender harassment and retaliation training to the Department of Public Safety and the Board of Nursing. Shannon is licensed to practice in Ohio and in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Ohio. Kendall D. Isaac concentrates his practice on workers' compensation, employment law, small business legal matters, and mediation/arbitration. Prior to the formation of The Isaac Firm, Kendall was employed with a major regional law firm where he represented Fortune 500 employers in the administration of their Ohio workers’ compensation claims. He has argued before the industrial commission in virtually every hearing office in the state. Prior to his legal career, Kendall worked in an insurance claims defense capacity, as well as a human resource generalist and in management roles for several Fortune 500 companies. In these capacities, he has negotiated and settled countless personal injury claims, worked with employer workers’ compensation programs, and facilitated sensitive employee relations issues. Jaime Landrum Powell is an attorney with Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur, LLP. She works with employers to manage their employment and labor relations issues. Ms. Landrum Powell has in-depth experience with the Fair Labor Standards Act and corresponding state wage-and-hour laws and routinely offers employers compliance advice, defends them against claimed violations, and represents them during wage-and-hour audits. In addition, she assists employers that face employment discrimination and contract-based employment claims and has defended employers in both state and federal courts, before administrative agencies such as the Ohio Civil Rights Commission and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and in alternative dispute resolution settings. Ms. Landrum Powell also provides practical, effective advice regarding the day-to-day labor and employment topics that arise in the workplace, including employee discipline, internal investigations, reductions in force, and personnel policy issues.
