What is a Masters of Taxation?

A Masters of Taxation (MT) is a 24 credit degree program for students with an undergraduate background in business and accounting.

Why get a Masters of Taxation?

The MT degree qualifies for the 5th year requirement now needed for those who wish to sit for the CPA exam. The MT degree also provides a student with significant knowledge and understanding of tax law and practice.

Who hires CULS MT graduates?

We have MT alumni working at the Big 4 accounting firms, regional accounting firms and small accounting firms. We also have MT alumni with their own practices. In addition, many of our alumni go to work for the tax and accounting departments of companies like Nationwide, AEP, Limited Brands, Abercrombie & Fitch.

What are the admission requirements?

An applicant must have at least 24 credit hours of business and accounting courses and a bachelors degree from an accredited undergraduate institution. In addition, an applicant must have completed at least one course each in federal taxation and business law. If the applicant has not completed both of these courses, conditional admission may be granted.

What services are available to MT students?

MT students have full access to all law school services, including financial aid, career services, the library, student counseling, and parking.

What courses does an MT student take?

The requirements for an MT are the same as for an LL.M. in Taxation. MT students take all of the same required courses, except that a separate section of tax research I is offered for MT students.

How many credits are required to earn an MT degree?

Like the LL.M. in Taxation, a student must complete 24 hours of tax course work. With written approval of the Academic Director, Graduate Law Programs, an MT student can take up to 4 credits of advanced business law courses.

Who advises MT students?

MT students can obtain basic academic advising from Assistant Dean Jennifer DiSanza. Career Services is available to assist MT students with job search and career questions. In addition, MT students may also seek academic or career advice from Professor Danshera Cords.

Can MT students work while enrolled in the MT degree programs?

Absolutely. Most of our MT students attend CULS part time and work full time. There are no restrictions on the number of hours that a graduate tax student can work. All of the courses for the MT program are offered in the evening.

How many credits are required for full time status?

For financial aid purposes, a student must take at least 4 credits during Fall and Spring terms and at least 2 credits during Summer term to be considered a full-time student for that term.

For immigration purposes, a student must take at least 7 credits during Fall and Spring terms to be considered a full-time student.

What is the tuition rate for MT credits?

The MT program’s tuition is the same rate per credit as J.D. tuition.

How long does a student have to complete an MT?

An MT can be completed in a single year by attending full-time. However, a student is permitted up to 6 years to complete the MT program.
