November, 1999Professor Bradley Smith addressed students at the University of Virginia Law School on November 8, 1999, on "Controlling Leviathan: A Case Study of Campaign Finance 'Reform': Unintended Consequences and Rule Upon Rule. Professor Dennis Hirsch was appointed Legal Advisor to the Steering Committee for Project CLEAR (Community Leadership to Effect Air emission Reductions), a group of community leaders who seek to map out effective air pollution control strategies for our region and build community support for them. October, 1999On October 22, Professor Mark Strasser made a presentation on Same-Sex Marriage and Equal Protection at the University of Chicago Law School Roundtable Symposium, "A Symposium on Same-Sex Marriage." On October 22, 1999, Professor Mike Distelhorst presented a paper entitled, "A Business Ethics Approach to Contractual Good Faith and Fair Dealing as a Way of Policing Managed Healthcare Companies," at the Sixth Annual International Conference Promoting Business Ethics held at Niagara University. On October 14, 1999, Professor Dennis Hirsch served as moderator at an American Bar Association forum on the Second Generation of Environmental Improvement Act. Professor Dennis Hirsch was appointed as chair of the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy and Resources Subcommittee on Alternative Regulatory Methods. Professor Mike Distelhorst served as a panelist for the Legislative Ethics Program to be presented at the Adam’s Mark hotel, in Columbus, on October 18, 1999. Dean Steve Bahls presented a paper entitled Agricultural Law and the Media at the Annual Educational Conference of the American Agricultural Law Association on October 16, 1999 in New Orleans. Adjunct Professor Chris McNeil produced and presented a seminar for the National Association of Administrative Law Judges in Asheville, North Carolina, on October 11-13, 1999, entitled "Improving Public Trust and Confidence in the Administrative Law Process." September, 1999Professor Mike Distelhorst served as Program Chair for the Annual Meeting of the American Bar Association’s Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs in Skamania, Washington on September 28, 1999. Professor Distelhorst serves as one of 10 national commissioners. On September 24, 1999, Professor Dennis Hirsch was an invited speaker at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business Impact Conference on Environmental Contracting at which he commented on a paper delivered by Prof. Alfred Marcus of the University of Minnesota. On September 17, 1999, Professor Mike Distelhorst presented a program on "Legal Ethics and the Good Judge" for the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Trial Judges in Cleveland. Professor Bradley Smith delivered a talk titled "Campaigning Against Campaigns: The Reformist Assault on Political Speech," at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan on September 16, 1999. The talk was part of a five day seminar on "The Rule of Law and the Permanent Campaign," running from September 12 to September 16. On September 10, 1999, Adjunct Professor Chris McNeil presented a program for the National Association of Administrative Law Judges in Asheville, North Carolina, entitled "Improving Public Trust and Confidence in the Administrative Judiciary." August, 1999Professor Mike Distelhorst presented a program dealing with "Legal Ethics, Professionalsim, and Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession" for the in-house legal department of Wendy’s International, Inc. on August 17, 1999. Professor Mike Distelhorst was one of three speakers at a program dealing with "Legal Ethics, Professionalism, and Lawyer Substance Abuse in the Legal Profession" for the legal department of Nationwide Enterprises on August 16, 1999. Dean Steve Bahls presented a discussion of Continuing Legal Education in the Year 2002 at the Columbus Bar Association Leadership Retreat in Athens, Ohio on August 14, 1999. On August 13, Professor Roberta Mitchell and Adjunct Professors Scot Dewhirst and Terry Wheeler taught a program in Advanced Mediation - Issue Identification and Generation of Alternatives. Dean Steve Bahls spoke at the closing ceremony of the Capital University Greek Summer program about the future of the practice of transnational law. The closing ceremony was held in the historic Roman Forum in Thessaloniki, Greece on August 5, 1999. On August 5, 1999, Adjunct Professor Chris McNeil chaired the annual meeting of the Courts & Communities Committee of the National Conference of Administrative Law Judges, for the Judicial Division of the American Bar Association, in Atlanta, Georgia. July, 1999On July 7 & 8, in Burlington, Vermont, Professor David Mayer presented two lectures -- "Antitrust vs. Capitalism" and "The Nature of Government" -- at the Institute for Objectivist Studies' Tenth Annual Summer Seminar. On July 1, 1999, Adjunct Professor Chris McNeil produced and presented a seminar entitled "Training for Bureau of Motor Vehicle Hearing Examiner" for the Ohio Department of Public Safety on July 1, 1999, in Columbus, Ohio. June, 1999On June 11, Professor Mark Strasser addressed the International Society of Family Law at the University of New Mexico Law School on "Courts, Legislatures, and Second Parent Adoptions: On Deference and the Best Interests of the Child" Professor Dennis Hirsch participated in a two-week environmental
tour of Cuba with members of the Capital University Biology Department.
The group met with senior Cuban environmental policy officials and visited
