Alan S. Acker

Alan Acker is a solo practitioner here in Columbus and focuses his law practice in the areas of estate planning, income taxation of trusts and estates, and probate. Acker is a frequent lecturer for Ohio Continuing Legal Education and other professional groups

Acker has created a web-based system for Ohio attorneys to help them draft revocable trusts, wills, and financial powers of attorney. Information about this drafting system can be found at www.trustandwilldraftingsystem.com or by contacting Acker directly. Acker has prepared trust and will forms for several law firms.

Acker has authored a book, The Estate Planners’ Guide to Income in Respect of a Decedent, published by CCH, and has authored five BNA Tax Management Portfolios, the most recent of which is Accounting for Trusts and Estates.

Acker has published numerous articles (his first appearing in the Journal of Taxation in 1978) that have appeared in numerous tax and legal publications, and such articles have included the Flexible Irrevocable Trust, Fixing the Broken Trust, and Death Bed Tax Planning.

Acker was named by his peers as one of the 100 Super Lawyers® in Ohio in 2005, was named one of the top 100 estate planning lawyers in the country by Worth Magazine in its December 2005 issue, was named Distinguished Author by Tax Management Inc., and was awarded the Outstanding Discussion Leader by the Virginia Society of CPAs back in 1991.

Acker is a member of the Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law Section Board of Governors of the Ohio State Bar Association, a member of the Ohio Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Specialty Board for Ohio, and a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.

Acker currently is the chairperson of the Columbus Estate Planning Group. He was the chairperson of the lawyers and medical professionals who drafted Living Wills and Health Care Powers of Attorney Forms available to lawyers from the OSBA.

Acker is an adjunct professor income taxation of trusts and estates and, beginning this year, of drafting estate planning documents at Capital University Law School.
