J.D./Master of Science in Nursing

Modern advancements in technology combined with regulatory changes in the health care system have raised many new legal issues in the dynamic area of health care law. Capital University's joint JD/Master of Science in Nursing program prepares students for the complexities of health care in the 21st century by weaving the academic disciplines of nursing and law into a unique educational program.

Renee Mallett, a 1998 graduate of the JD/MSN program, has made the most of her combined legal and nursing background. Her education and experience contributes greatly to her work as the Vice President of Quality and Legal Counsel for the Licking Memorial Health Systems.

"My health care and legal background allow me to do my job at highest level. Having a thorough understanding of the health care environment, along with the legal expertise, provide an increased level of understanding, above what a traditionally educated attorney might possess."

Capital University Law School partners with Capital's School of Nursing to offer the J.D./M.S.N. program. Introduced in 1994, the program is fully accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and the Commission on College Nursing Education (CCNE) and offers full-time day and part-time evening options. Students in this combined degree program gain not only an advanced expertise in the practice of nursing but also effective analytical tools to address the legal challenges that surround the health care profession. Capital graduate have the knowledge and skills to transition into careers in medical consulting, peer review and quality assurance, health care strategic management, credentialing and health care organizational structure.

Students in the joint degree program can complete both degrees with fewer credit hours than if the degrees were pursued separately. The typical part-time joint degree candidate is able to complete both degrees within 5 1/2 years. The candidate who completes Law School as a full-time student can earn both degrees in four years and three summers.

Nursing classes are offered through Capital University's School of Nursing. Classes are available in the evenings.
