
J.D./Master of Sports AdministrationThe scope of legal issues revolving around the world of sports can be mind-boggling. Negotiating player contracts and licensing agreements, ensuring compliance with league rules, participation in collective bargaining negotiations and comprehending the regulation of intercollegiate and amateur athletics is all in a day's work of an attorney with sports law expertise. Opportunities in the sports industry also extend beyond the legal and performance areas into the administrative and management of franchises, athletic departments, corporations and facilities. Students who wish to practice law or manage in the exciting field of sports law and administration should consider Capital University Law School's JD/Master of Sports Administration program. The JD/MSA is coordinated in conjunction with Ohio University's Master of Sports Administration program. The Ohio University program was the first MSA program in the United States and is widely acknowledged as the #1 program in the country for sports administration education. Students participating in the joint degree program take their law classes at Capital University Law School in Columbus. The sports administration classes are held on Ohio University's campus in Athens, which is approximately 80 miles southeast of Columbus. The combination of the two programs not only allows for students to benefit from outstanding classroom experience but also provides opportunities for valuable practical skills development and networking opportunities that are vital to success in this field. Capital and its joint JD/MSA program have alumni placed with sports/entertainment organizations such as Disney, Nike and the Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL franchise). The Law School also has several graduates working as professional sports agents. Generally, a full-time joint degree candidate is able to complete both degrees within 3 1/2 or four years. Part-time joint degree candidates can complete both programs in five years, including summers. However, part-time law students will be required to transfer to full-time status while enrolled in the two-quarter residency requirement of Ohio University's program.
